More of His Glory-Seminar Four (Day 2)

john17Today’s lesson of Pursuing More of Jesus was overflowing with the love and commitment of Jesus. These verses are so rich with information, my Pastor would probably spend two months in sermon on this! As it stands, we’re spending a short amount of time-just one day’s lesson.  My favorites from this lesson include:

Now they know-verse 7
They know with certainty-verse 8
They believed-verse 8
Glory has come-verse 10
They may be one as we are-verse 11

Today’s Scripture Verse (Jesus Prays for His Disciples)

I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. 11I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name—the name you gave me—so that they may be one as we are one. 12While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled. John 17:6-12

    Prayer Requests

Almighty God, protect us in the name of Jesus and fill our hearts, souls and and minds with his love. May we know Jesus with certainty. May we Believe Jesus with confidence. May we see your glory and shine your grace. In Jesus’ name, amen.

I am overwhelmed with today’s scripture. It seems to be saying a lot, and it is a lot to take in. I think I understand it to mean that Jesus is asking God to protect us (?). It also seems to be telling a story about the disciples and that Jesus knows one of them is being destructive. I am not quite sure about what the significance of the scripture is…

It’s easy to find today’s lesson confusing, I counted the references to:

Those, they, them = 20 times
        You, God = 18 times
        I, Me = 19 times

If I counted incorrectly, then I can assume Jesus, God and the disciples were referenced almost 60 times! That’s confusing to me, I need my scripture verses in smaller bites.

I did put “hearts” around a favorite verse 🙂 from today:
All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. Verse 10

Verse 11 has always intrigued me especially when Jesus says, “protect them by the power of your name—the name you gave me—so that they may be one as we are one.”

I often wonder if we truly comprehend the power of His name. He’s asking the Father to protect us by the power of His name.” Saying “In Jesus’ name” is not just a cliche’ that we hear on Christian television sometimes by questionable people. There is power in His name. When I say His name over and over and think of who He is I get strength from that.

Also, when He says “the name you gave me”. I get goosebumps when I think of God giving Him his name. If you read back and of course a lot have repeated it many times in Luke 1:31 when God sent Gabriel to Mary Gabriel says “You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus.” That’s so beautiful. God named Jesus through the messenger Gabriel.

Of course Jesus goes on to say “so that they may be one as we are one.” God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are one and by the name of Jesus we are one.
He said that while He (Jesus) was here He protected them (The disciples) and now we are protected by His name.

This is really a lot and you are right Christine this could be many many sermons.

This is so exciting though when you really think about it. We are not Christians by our head knowledge. It something so much more than that.
Our spirits are one with God through salvation, believing in the Name of Jesus in our hearts and confessing the Name with our mouths and then this process takes place. We really need to nurture that happening.

      This is so good.
