Supernatural God (Week 2, Day 4)

God might want to minister to you in a miraculous way that you can experience through your five senses. -Priscilla Shirer

Last night before going to bed, I wrote about my wilderness journey and shared my disbelief in angels. I knew that by sharing this, God was going to teach me about angels. I have experienced His supernatural power in similar situations. Priscilla encourages us to keep a journal of God’s supernatural presence and His gifts to us….this will be the first one to write in my journal. We’re reading week two of One in a Million: Journey to Your Promised Land.

When I revealed my disbelief, God knew it was sincere. It would not help for another Christian to point to me and say “you have unbelief” because I needed to experience this myself in my journey. I revealed it to God, not so He would prove Himself to me, because that would be deceptive and an even bigger disbelief. I revealed it to God because it was true and I was sharing my heart with Him. God answered with a supernatural experience, for me to believe. It does not matter if you believe, because the experience was not for you, it was meant for me. I am only sharing this so you will understand how He appears and answers us during a wilderness journey.

Before going to bed, I asked my eight-year-old daughter if she believed in angels. She replied “angels are all around us, covering our body and protecting us from sin. They guard us like a layer. Right now there are my angels and your angels and they are covering both of us.” I asked if she could see them and she said no. I asked how she knows all this, did she learn this at school. She replied “it’s in my head. I just know it because it’s in my mind.” Children believe much easier than adults!

About 1:30 in the morning, I woke up to sounds in my bedroom. These were not the ordinary sounds that come from squirrels on my roof, these were sounds coming from my dresser, about three feet from my head. The sound was a light knocking noise, on the dresser. My initial reaction was to disbelieve what I was hearing. So the sound continued. My second reaction was absolute terror…..angels were in my room and revealing themselves to me….that’s major frightening! So the sound continued, and as I let go of my fear, I accepted that God was teaching me about angels. Once I felt His presence, My fear dissolved and I thanked Him for the experience and the knocking stopped.

In today’s lesson Priscilla writes about using our five senses to experience God. I do this constantly, using my eyes, ears, touch, taste and smell to know God. My eyes may see something unusual, such as two trees that appear to be dancing, while the surrounding trees are standing still without wind. My ears may hear God’s word as I listen to Christian music. My hands may feel God’s presence as I am touching an animal. My mouth may taste God as I eat my evening meal, sometimes eating as Jesus would eat so I experience more of Him. And I may smell God in the flowers that sit on my table. I’m not just reading about God in a Bible, I am experiencing God through my five senses. I was excited to read about this in today’s lesson….because it has been very real for me.

Normally I do not share my supernatural experiences in such a public way, visible on a blog. It will tempt some people to take the focus off God and Jesus, and place the focus on me, where it does not belong. I’m not some supernatural person with Biblical powers. I am simply a woman of God, who reads her Bible and experiences God through her five senses. I’m just like you!

Prayer Requests

Father God, we pray that the Holy Spirit will open our five senses so we see you moving in our lives in supernatural ways. As we walk in our wilderness journey, and you strip away any areas that are hampering intimacy with You, we come in obedience to You, willing to learn. Each woman in this Bible study has a unique relationship with You. We pray that those relationships are respected by others, not envied by others. We pray that those relationships are shared in learning, not in pride. We pray that each woman reading this will examine her own heart, not the heart of those in the Bible study small group. Father, we pray for your loving heart to reach our human lives….Amen.

Priscilla Shirer Quotes

  • In His grace and His love for His feeble children, the Lord showed His presence so that they could be certain He was with them on the journey.
  • God still chooses to display Himself to people today when, for reasons we’ll never know, He orchestrates nature or circumstances to dramatically show His presence.
  • He can and will encourage us in our journey by allowing, when He sees fit, His children to have visible evidence of His working on our behalf.
  • God might want to minister to you in a miraculous way that you can experience through your five senses.

Today’s Scripture Verses (NASB)

I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. John 14:16-17

But God’s angry displeasure erupts as acts of human mistrust and wrongdoing and lying accumulate, as people try to put a shroud over truth. But the basic reality of God is plain enough. Open your eyes and there it is! By taking a long and thoughtful look at what God has created, people have always been able to see what their eyes as such can’t see: eternal power, for instance, and the mystery of his divine being. So nobody has a good excuse. What happened was this: People knew God perfectly well, but when they didn’t treat him like God, refusing to worship him, they trivialized themselves into silliness and confusion so that there was neither sense nor direction left in their lives. They pretended to know it all, but were illiterate regarding life. They traded the glory of God who holds the whole world in his hands for cheap figurines you can buy at any roadside stand. Romans 1:20 The Message

The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship.Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world. God has made a home in the heavens for the sun. Psalm 19:1-4 NLT

Group Discussion

Have you experienced God in a supernatural way? If so, please share your experience. If you have not experienced Him in this way, what do you imagine your response would be….if you saw God’s supernatural presence? Would you believe, or wait for a jury of your peers to prove that it did or did not happen to you. Let’s start a conversation about this.

Following Him,

I don’t recall experiencing God in the supernatural, but I don’t think that I am as aware as I need to be. Many things come and go around me and I am always preoccupied with something else at the time. I al praying that God opens my eyes to the gift of awareness that only He can provide. Tamara

My mother always believed an angel came and helped her in an airport in Hong Kong once. The last thing she said before she died was, “Well, there’s that angel and I didn’t even know he was coming!”

Thank you for sharing this. I have asked people for many years, in private, “Have you ever seen an angel?” I did it this week at a social event. I told the people that most people have had experiences but don’t share them. They are afraid of angels, and afraid of the criticism of skeptics, or that they are going to be held responsible for a higher level of holiness to God by their friends.

Most people tell me stories they’ve never shared with even family and close friends. I have published three on the website above, but have many more. I think if we share, it gives glory to God. in almost all cases, when angels show up as “people” in Scripture stories, the first thing they say is, “Fear not!” I say that to you, Christine, as when angels spoke to Mary and Elizabeth in Luke one, they were told they were greatly favored. I think the angels want to be more “normal” for us if we can let them.

And, yes, I have seen them and talked to one or two but as Scripture says, was not totally sure, they were “unawares.” Later I knew and no one else could know. It was a combination of things, but mainly the effect on my walk with God was part of it. One of them really opened up my heart to joy by telling me a story: joy in a way I had not experienced. That is an angelic thing. “Joy to the World.”

Thank you Bob. I’ve never heard of your blog and look forward to checking it out! Last night I started reading the book Angels by Dr. David Jeremiah and I’m looking forward to reading a book by the same name, written by Billy Graham. There seems to be much scriptural information out there….that is where my heart is leading me. I’ve heard what people say about angels….now I am interested in knowing what God says about angels. I’ve learned:

      1) God sends angels of destruction, warriors of His wrath
      2) God sends angels as messengers
      3) God sends angels to protect and comfort
      4) God sends angels for guidance
      5) God sent Satan, the fallen angel

That’s more than I knew yesterday! And it’s all in the Bible.

I have experienced God in a supernatural way. Not long before the “big spiritual experience” described at I saw an angel standing next to my sleeping wife. I was entering the bedroom late at night, so it was dark but there was some light coming through the window.

I didn’t see a thing, I saw a lack of a thing which I believe now was an angel. What we take for granted when we look at empty air or space was missing, so I saw a lack of a thing in the rough form of a human wearing a cloak. The emptiness was in a discernible shape. I do not know if this was a good or bad angel, but I felt no fear of it and lay down and went back to sleep.

Shortly after this experience, God ran to me as I lay in bed and showed me the missing pieces that formed my life to that point. It was a sonic boom of information that He has used over and over again in my ministry as a wounded healer. God brings people to me that are missing some combination of the same pieces. All I do to set these people free is relay to them which pieces we have in common, God does the rest.
