The Ultimate Guide to the Daniel Fast

By February 3, 2011Book Reviews

The act of fasting is as old as scripture, yet often practiced by modern Christians. While there are numerous books about fasting, I recently had an opportunity to read The Ultimate Guide to the Daniel Fast by Kristen Feola. In the introduction to the book, the author explains the purpose of fasting: “when you fast, you restrict your food intake as a form of self-denial and worship, setting aside your basic physical desires for spiritual ones.” Her perspective is accurate as well as encouraging- we are not fasting to lose weight, and center our thoughts on ourselves. We are not fasting to impress our friends for being “good Christians.” We are fasting, in the words of the author, to “pull away from life’s distractions and focus on your Savior so that you can be strengthened, refreshed and renewed.” The Daniel fast is a partial fast with restricted foods. It’s high in fiber and Feola recommends drinking water to support your body’s adjustment to the diet change. Always discuss fasting and dieting with your doctor, and only do what is safe for your body.

Besides the health disclaimer, Feola warns her readers that fasting will attract the attention of Satan and to be prepared for spiritual warfare. She provides 21 days of scripture devotions to guide you while fasting. In addition, the book includes a shopping list, menu planning, and more than 100 recipes. Those recipes I tested were fabulous, and have become family favorites. One of my favorite sections in the book is called “Verses to Feed On” with a list of 25 verses to think about while fasting. Overall, the book is well written and well organized, with tasty recipes for fasting. I was disappointed in the food photos, the images were not enticing and did not reflect the beauty of the food.

From personal experience, I find this fasting book more helpful than the book called Fasting by Jentezen Franklin. I used his book for a 40 day fast, and at the end of the 40 days I was hospitalized with hypoglycemia and under intense spiritual attack. The Ultimate Guide to the Daniel Fast by Kristen Feola is a more careful approach, with a focus on safety and healthy eating. She does require her readers to eliminate sugar, coffee and tea- so be warned that sudden changes in diet can cause medical problems, especially if you are diabetic or pre-diabetic. Discuss fasting with your physician, especially if you will be fasting 21 days or longer. Safety first!

I’m so interested in this book. I’ve wanted to learn more about fasting, and though I’ve done some research in various areas, I have not run across this book before. I am presently craving a more in-depth spiritual worship experience with the LORD. I have prayed to God about having a scripture rich, praise-fest and fast. In learning about this book at this time, I believe I may have been directed to my answer.
Thanks so much for your review. I can’t wait to get this book!

How well timed this book review is!

I recently joined in on Rick Warren’s 52 week The Daniel Plan online from SaddleBack church. This book review led me to the authors web site which will be a helpful resource as a couple of friends and I seek to make our bodies a more holy and clean dwelling for the Holy Spirit to dwell.

I also plan to purchase this book!

    Blessings !
