Seasons of the Heart, Book Review

In her devotional book, Seasons of the Heart: A Year of Devotions from One Generation of Women to Another, Donna Kelderman has given women the gift of wisdom through community and spiritual mentoring.  She has gathered writings from a queen, a missionary, a pastor’s wife, the head of a girl’s school, and more, spanning centuries of history and experience.  Some of the authors in this collection were single, married, widowed.  Their lives varied, but their steadfast faith did not.

Each day’s reading begins with a brief Scripture verse and then provides an excerpt from the writing of one of these women of faith (sometimes previously published, sometimes just part of their own prayer journal and private writings).  The months are each introduced with a spiritual poem.  It’s a simple format, but the content can be both lovely and profound.

I personally love that Kelderman included a page-long biography on each of the authors whose works she includes.  This allows us to get to know more about them, some I’ve heard of before (like Katherine Parr or Susannah Wesley) and some I had not (like Ruth Bryan or Anne Dutton).

The subtitle of the book is: A Year of Devotions from One Generation of Women to Another, and the collection really is a powerful reminder that regardless of the era we live in or the modernity of the problems we face, truth remains, God is faithful, and we can trust Him.  What a wonderful testimony to us.

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own.
