David Online Bible Study Week 8

By March 2, 2014David

tapedWelcome back to Week eight of online bible study as we continue our study of David: Seeking a Heart like His by Beth Moore. We are now 80% finished with this study and growing deeper in God’s Word. The small groups continue to show evidence of you drawing nearer to God

Family drama, scandals and secrets! It plagues us all at some point, in some way small or huge.  But when the dust settles, as we see with David’s family this week, hearts and spirits are broken and restoration is needed.

This week finds our learning focus on David’s children and their part in the drama that plagues David’s family line.  A horrific assault occurs and Tamar is left to deal with the shame all alone.  The very people who should have assistsed her in healing, instead urged her to keep her pain and hurt inside and never to speak of it.  Tamar did not receive her justice.  How many times do we see this in the world, or in our own lives.  How many of us have fallen victim to a situation that brings about shame, only to be told, “keep quiet about it.”

This story reminds me that as a parent, our example, our mistakes, our sins often times spill over into our children’s lives.  When we don’t correct their inappropriate behavior we are not only condoning what they do, but we are causing more damage.  David’s refusal to address the sins of his sons definitely caused great harm.  I asked in my mind, why didn’t David do anything to Amnon after he learned of his assault on Tamar. Many things came to my mind, but one sticks out the most: perhaps David felt that he could not address it because he had done something similar: disobeyed God, took what was not his to take.  We often feel like that don’t we? Well let me share with you that once we repent to God, and He has restored us, it is our duty to intervene.  We must tell our children, close friends, family of the very experience that we have had so that they won’t make the same mistakes we did.  We must carry the message that God can and will restore.

During this week, think on this scripture 2 Samuel 14:14 “Like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be recovered, so we must die. But God does not take away life; instead, he devises ways so that a banished person may not remain estranged from him.”  Doesn’t this give you great hope, that even when we mess up, God still wants to restore us to Him.

Have a wonderful and blessed week!
