Welcome back to womens online Bible study as we continue our journey through “Breaking Free” by Beth Moore. We’re on week three and seeing much growth in our discussions each week. Let’s explore the obstacles to belief!
Dictionary.com defines an obstacle as anything that obstructs or hinders progress. In my classroom, I have beautiful hardwood flooring. It adds charm and distinctiveness to an otherwise ordinary environment. However, recently an obstacle has developed. A nail is emerging out of the wood in the main pathway of the classroom. Myself and several students trip over it during the course of the day as we make it to our respective seats.. As we wait for our school janitor to repair it, we have began to avoid that area of the floor all together. In avoiding the nail, we can efficiently move about without tripping or injuring ourselves. We’re managing, but as we’re continuing to walk on the floor, more nails have began to appear. So what we were once able to avoid, a single nail (obstacle), has become more of a daily challenge as additional nails (obstacles) have emerged.
This week we studied the importance of removing obstacles that block our spiritual growth. The obstacles were: Unbelief, Pride, Idolatry, Prayerlessness, and Legalism. Personally, I am intimately familiar with each of these obstacles. As I’ve reflected upon different seasons in my life. I can tell when my spiritual growth has been stunted by one of these obstacles. In my human perspective, I could rank order them in how much each has impacted my life at one time or another. But that would be unwise and short-sighted. Because we live in a fallen world, none of us are immune to experiencing or having obstacles appear in our lives. How we address them is of the utmost importance to experiencing freedom in Christ.
Isaiah 57:14 says “And it will be said: Build up, build up, prepare the road! Remove the obstacles out of the way of my people”. As we read the verse for a personal application we can make the connection to our spiritual lives. God wants us to build up our spiritual life by removing anything that hinders us from experiencing the awesome power of his love.
Continual application of this week’s lesson requires us to first identify the obstacles that are presently holding our spiritual lives hostage. Next, we must believe about ourselves what God believes. He truly wants us to be free. Finally, we have to be overcomers of the temptation to be self-serving, self-seeking, or self-absorbed with what we desire and not what God desires for us.
