Spiritual Warfare 401

We’ve finished our last week of study with a lesson on Spiritual Warfare 401. In this lesson from the book The Invisible War, author Chip Ingram discusses deliverance from demonic influence; a lesson on how to respond when the enemy is already inside your life. We looked at intercessory prayer, which Ingram believes is missing in the life of most Christians and churches today. He stressed the importance of prayer which is consistent, intense and strategic and gave us the example of praying ACTS. We’ve used this prayer method in my church small group and if you’re not already doing this I recommend you give it a try!

Praying ACTS

  1. Adoration- give praise to God
  2. Confession-confess to God
  3. Thanksgiving-give thanks to God
  4. Supplication-present your requests to God

In this week’s study, Ingram listed three common pathways to demonic influence. These activities include: sin, spiritual rebellion and unresolved anger and bitterness. Ingram follows this with a list of symptoms which may be demonic and cautions us “the Bible doesn’t imply that all the following symptoms are demonic, but it does warn us to consider the demonic as a possible source.” We learned how the demonic disguises itself as a form of entertainment-through tarot cards, Ouija boards and fortune telling-and easily can slip into an open door for a demonic invitation.

For those deeply influenced by the demonic, Chip Ingram suggests exploring the ministries of Neil Anderson and Mark Bubeck.

Prayer Requests

We reset the prayer wall at the end of each month, so be sure to post new prayer requests on December 1st.

In the end of the book, Ingram shares the prayers of his ten-year-old son. Write out your own version of this prayer and practice saying it aloud.  Kneeling by his bed, his son prayed “Dear Lord Jesus, thank you that I am complete in Christ, and I thank you that I have the armor of God. Dear Lord, these spirits are seeking to assault me tonight, and in the blood of Jesus, by his great name and power, I command them to leave me alone. I claim right now that greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world. Depart from this bedroom and go where Jesus sends you. Amen” (Source: The Invisible War, Chip Ingram)

Chip Ingram Quotes

  • Intercessory prayer is our most powerful and strategic corporate weapon in spiritual warfare.
  • Power falls where prayer prevails.
  • Demonic forces shudder when God’s people begin to pray.
  • Sin is probably the most common pathway to demonic influence.
  • Sin is an open door to evil spirits.
  • While the war is invisible, victory and defeat are not.

This Week’s Memory Verse (NASB)

You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. 1 John 4:4

Spiritual Warfare 301

Welcome back to our study of the Chip Ingram book The Invisible War as we discuss Session Three: How to Do Battle with the Enemy and Win. Most Christians know Satan exists, some will give him credit for spiritual attacks and others ignore him hoping the enemy will go away. In Spiritual Warfare 301, we’re given the tools to stand strong and fight the most intense battles without backing down and losing our own spiritual territory. Now that we are aware of the Invisible War (Spiritual Warfare 101), and gathered our battle gear in basic training (Spiritual Warfare 201) we need to know how to win a Full Frontal Attack from the enemy (Spiritual Warfare 301).

Hostile demonic activity can be repeated over several years, and when we win one battle the enemy waits for another place to attack. Often when faced with a full frontal attack we just don’t know what to do. These attacks are rare, according to Ingram, yet when they do happen fear causes us to  immobilize or to flee. He writes “when you are wearing your spiritual armor and still you are bombarded with spiritual opposition, there are specific strategies you can use to win-decisively.” It’s important to recognize that sometimes our battle gear alone does not protect us, and we need to fight back. If we do not fight back, Satan seeks to isolate us with our pride. We don’t tell others about our full frontal attacks, fearing they’ll think something is wrong with us or we’re crazy. It’s one of the reasons we decided to lead the Spiritual warfare bible study- to share our stories with each other and affirm what the bible says about spiritual warfare. It’s present today, it’s intense, and we need to be prepared for battle. “When the light exposes the secret, then it gets defeated” says Ingram.

Ingram lists five times when you can expect a full blown frontal attack from the enemy. Be on guard for subtle attacks and be prepared to raise your Ephesians 6 Shield of Faith. Our faith is rooted in scripture, and when you don’t memorize scripture, your defense is weakened. When the flaming arrows are thrown at you, you claim God’s Word and fight back. The goal of the enemy attack is to get you to be afraid, to shift your focus and take your eyes off God. The instant you recognize the attack, you need to fight back with the truth of scripture. We don’t need to be afraid when we stand on the promises of God.

Chip Ingram Quotes

  • The enemy loves to immobilize us with pride and fear.
  • Sometimes we forget that we are in a spiritual battle for our souls. The battle is fierce and the implications are eternal.
  • When we sense the darts of doubt and deception, we raise the shield of faith.
  • Don’t let the enemy’s missiles drive you beyond God’s boundaries.
  • It is imperative that we keep God’s word in our mind and Satan’s lies out of it.
  • Faith overcomes.
  • In the cosmic conflict, the front lines are between your ears.
  • Christians who are not filling their minds with scripture are like warriors going out to battle without a helmet.
  • Evil has to bow to the rhema of God.

This Week’s Memory Verse

In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:16-17 NIV

Love in Christ,

Spiritual Warfare 201

Last week we had an introduction to the invisible war and a great discussion as a group. I personally thank each of you for stepping outside your comfort zone and sharing your personal stories. If you have been reading along with us, we’ve just finished reading about Spiritual Warfare 201 from Chip Ingram’s book The Invisible War: What Every Believer Needs to Know About Satan, Demons and Spiritual Warfare. By now you realize this book was not written to scare us or to turn the enemy into a scary movie character- the book was written to inform us and arm us with the knowledge of God’s Word in Ephesians 6. In our first week of study we developed an awareness for the invisible war and this week we received our basic training. We know victory has been won and we’ve been given a territory to protect. Ingram writes “when we follow God’s instructions, given through Paul in the letter to the Ephesians and through the rest of Scripture-we will be able to defeat Satan in the specific battles in our lives.” This week we learned how to use God’s battle gear in our daily living.

In Spiritual Warfare 201, we pick up the battle gear and put it on.This is an action we do, and should be as natural as our morning routine- when practiced daily and with intention. The enemy waits until you are no longer at the top of your game, and then he attempts to deceive you, discourage you and turn your heart away from the Lord. “We need to be prepared not just to resist when we are strong, confident and on guard but also to resist when we are least able to do it” writes Ingram. He then leads us through the metaphors for spiritual armor as listed in  scripture.

We read about the differences between conviction and condemnation and how the enemy can turn this against us in spiritual warfare. Ingram assures us “God’s desire is never to condemn, its to draw you back into a relationship with the Father.” When we are deceived with condemnation, we respond by hiding, denial and blame shifting. Always filter anything in your heart with the truth of scripture. If you draw closer to God, you’ve been convicted by Him. Rest in Him. If you hide, blame others or deny what you hear…fight back with full battle gear.

Prayer Requests

For the next week, pray Psalm 139:23-24 everyday: Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way.

Please read our Prayer Wall and intercede for those asking for your prayers. Submit your own prayer requests and allow us to pray with you.

Chip Ingram Quotes

  • You can’t win the battle if you don’t know you’re in it.
  • There are only two responses: do nothing or prepare. But the fact of the battle is given.
  • The key to living in victory and making the most of God’s grace begins with the armor we wear.
  • God is not a cosmic cop but a loving Father.
  • God’s grace is greater not only than all our sin, but also all our guilt.
  • When God works His truth into our hearts, we are called to live it out 24/7
  • You do not have to live where the condemnations of your heart take you.
  • God does not want you standing in the middle of an invisible war without any protection over your heart.
  • Satan wants us to fall for an easier gospel, a prettier gospel, or a more socially respectable gospel.
  • Satan rarely temps us with the “big sins”… he takes us down the delicate path of deception, an inch at a time.
  • God has given you the armor. It’s your responsibility to pick it up, put it on, and practice it.
  • Faith is based on fact, not feelings.

This Week’s Memory Verse

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. Ephesians 6:13-15 NIV

Group DiscussionAnswer one or as many as you want

  1. On page 78, Ingram writes “we have His Spirit and His various gifts, we have been joined to the spiritual body of Christ, and we have been promised an inheritance that includes forgiveness, peace and spiritual fruit. All of this territory is accomplished by Jesus and given to us by grace. When we prayed to receive Christ in faith, we received all this as our possession.” Is there any God-given spiritual territory you have already given up to the enemy? How can you take it back? (page 79)
  2. Do you get defensive when God points out the truth? what does that indicate about your spiritual armor? (page 88)
  3. How much of your faith depends on your feelings? When you notice your faith coming and going with your mood, what steps can you take to ground yourself more firmly in the gospel? (page 105)
  4. Share an example of condemnation. When did you experience true conviction and when did you experience false condemnation?

Love in Christ,

Spiritual Warfare 101

Welcome to our study on Spiritual Warfare. Our study is based on a book called The Invisible War by Chip Ingram. You will not understand spiritual warfare by following our blog articles, you must read the published book for the full teaching. As with any online bible study, we facilitate a discussion about the book and its contents as related to scripture. This week we’re discussing the first four chapters of the book- Spiritual Warfare 101. We learned that we’ll be assailed by the enemy and we need to withstand an attack from the enemy of God. Ingram writes “Your first responsibility is to be aware of the battle, your second responsibility is to depend on God’s strength and your third responsibility it to use the protection God had provided.” Notice that it is your RESPONSIBILITY to act and winning the battle does not come naturally. There is nothing passive about spiritual warfare. Satan schemes our downfall. Ingram provides a list of Satan’s schemes on page 50, based on an examination of his names in scripture:

  • Satan, meaning adversary
  • Devil, meaning slanderer
  • Lucifer, meaning shining one
  • Beelzebub, meaning lord of the flies
  • Belial, meaning false god
  • The evil one, meaning absolute corruption
  • The tempter, meaning to exploit and entice
  • The prince of this world, meaning a master of false systems
  • The accuser of the brethren, meaning he will condemn you

We’re all familiar with Ephesians 6 and the verses about putting on battle gear. In Spiritual Warfare 101, we’re introduced to the reasons why we need the battle gear and how to identify what we cannot see. “Awareness makes us sober and alert, always conscious that there is an adversary who is prowling around because he wants to destroy those who believe in God and blind those who don’t” says Ingram.

We learned this week about who we are fighting and what the invisible war really is. There are specific times in your life when you need to be ready to put on the armor of God. To win a battle, you need to know the enemy, his schemes and the tools given to you by God. The danger is to ignore the enemy or to give him credit for everything that happens in your life.

Prayer Requests
Heavenly Father, we come to you in prayer and protection as we journey into a spiritual warfare study during the next four weeks. Bring awareness of the battle into our hearts and minds. Provide discernment so we may see that which is demonic and that which is simply one of life’s events. Strengthen our ability to fight the battle and guide us into our battle gear as we win the war in Jesus name.

Please post any prayer request you have on the Bible Cafe Prayer Wall. Print a copy of the prayer requests and intercede for those who are asking for your help.

Chip Ingram Quotes

  • Our temptations are not random.
  • We live in a fallen world and bad things happen. Not everything occurs because of demonic schemes.
  • There are spiritual realities that every believer will either face up to or be defeated by, and only a solid understanding of our spiritual armor can prepare us for those realities.
  • Jesus was in the heat of a spiritual conflict and His greatest resource was prayer.
  • There is a visible and an invisible world that intersect, and we live in the intersection.
  • Our enemy isn’t playing tag; he’s seeking someone to devour.
  • We are involved in an invisible war, a cosmic conflict that has eternal implications.
  • There is one Creator and everything else is a creature.
  • This fallen world is a battleground, not a playground.

This Week’s Memory Verse (NASB)

We’re starting a new bible study on November 8, 2010 called Spiritual Warfare based upon the book The Invisible War, What Every Believer Needs to Know About Satan, Demons and Spiritual Warfare by Chip Ingram. If you have felt the effects of a spiritual attack, and felt underpowered or uncertain how to respond to an attack, then this study is perfect for you. The focus of the book is on the believer and skills needed for spiritual warfare.

The study is open to both men and women for participation. This is a four week bible study based on these themes:

  • Spiritual Warfare 101-What Every Believer Needs to Know
  • Spiritual Warfare 201-How to Prepare Yourself for Spiritual Battle
  • Spiritual Warfare 301-How to Do Battle With the Enemy and Win
  • Spiritual Warfare 401-Deliverance From Demonic Influence

Each week you’ll read a session on Spiritual Warfare as outlined above. We recommend you read one chapter each night, so you’ll have time to reflect on the content and the summary questions following each chapter. Once a week on MONDAY we’ll meet here at the Womens Bible Cafe for a group discussion of a Spiritual Warfare theme. We’ll post a blog summary for the week, along with a few questions for group discussions. You’ll visit the blog anytime after completion of your reading, and respond to the group questions.

To participate, you’ll need a copy of the book The Invisible War, What Every Believer Needs to Know About Satan, Demons and Spiritual Warfare by Chip Ingram.
