During out fifth week of the Jonah study, author Priscilla Shirer suggests that we have our own personal list of scripture verses for witnessing to others. One of the best scripture verses to witness with is your life verse, a verse that is simply so powerful and of such magnitude in your life that it centers your heart on the Word of God. A life verse will find you, a gift or a whisper from God at a time when you need it most. Please share your special life verses with the other women in this study, along with the story of how it became your life verse.
How I Found My Life Verse
I was a new believer and attending a womens bible study at church. During this time my daughter was being evaluated for a medical condition and my 7-year old just had her brain scanned. To say I was terrified is an understatement. As an immature believer, I only knew to turn to the bible, place my hands on top, and beg pray to God “please Lord, show me your word and speak to me in the verses. Give me strength as I face the doctor appointment today.” I opened the bible and my hands were sitting on Deuteronomy 6:5 “Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” I knew the women were praying for us at the morning bible study as I sat at the doctor’s office with my husband and daughter.
Waiting for the results of the exam, I saw a television and a stack of videos that our doctor had recorded. A video with the words “Spirituality and the Brain” captured my attention since I was exploring the bible in my church study. Inserting the video, I soon heard the doctor say these words “Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” A ray of goosebumps covered my body head to toe, as I sat in awe and amazement. God was present and God was real, alive and in the doctors office with me right then. I knew that no matter the outcome of the diagnosis, God was going to be my strength. My daughter was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome (high-functioning autism) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and we had a long journey ahead. The doctor who diagnosed her is named Dr. Amen. Only God alone could have selected that doctor, that video on the shelf and that life verse. I went home and accepted the holy spirit into my heart and never looked back.
After this became my life verse, I could not remember it! I carried a copy in my handbag, pasted a copy on the bathroom mirror and had a framed copy on my desk. Still, I had trouble remembering the exact words and the reference location of the verse. On day sitting in carpool, I was again praying and digging through the bible when I saw myself in Deuteronomy 11:18. As I read this verse a brick seemed to hit my head and I got the message: I could remember my life verse if I made jewelry with the words on it. So my second life verse became “Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.” And I started making jewelry with life verses on it.
